Childhood

I had a happy childhood…….two parents who loved each other, enough food, a Cape Cod house, good health and even a cat. Nevertheless, I figured out by age 2 that childhood is greatly overrated. Everyday, I am consciously thankful that I am an adult.
Perhaps this explains why my teaching career of fifty years has gone well. I love kids and understand their plight.
Childhood consists of big people calling the shots for little people, a necessary arrangement, but, in my opinion, a situation that only gets better as adulthood is attained.
Here are ten of the thousands of reasons I enjoy being a grownup:
- I will never have to eat liver again.
- I can choose my own clothes.
- I don’t have to turn the light off at 9:00 P.M. when I’m in the middle of a terrific book.
- I can drive.
- I get to pick the vacation destination.
- I can vote.
- I can decorate my own living space.
- I can drink wine.
- I don’t have to hear the phrase,”What will the neighbors think?”
- I am free to follow my own muses.
Hang in there, kids. Childhood is only a temporary position, and Wendy does end up much happier than Peter Pan.

Greetings and welcome...
The Suitcase Lady Blog is now in its fifteenth year. I am obviously a believer in these words from E. B. White. "We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry." Thank you for reading the writing that I delight in doing.

At least once I week I tell one of my kids, “When you’re the grown up you can do it differently but right now I’m the mom and I say…” As far as I can tell, their my future grandchildren will live outdoors and never wash hands.
